Understanding Natural Candle Changes in Winter: The Beauty of Imperfection

As the temperature drops, you might notice small changes in your candles — a frosted surface, slight separation from the glass, or an uneven top. These are completely natural characteristics of plant-based waxes, especially during the colder months.

At KIHO, we see these not as flaws, but as reminders that each piece is crafted from real, living materials that respond to nature — just as we do.

1. Frosting

A soft, snowy bloom that may appear on the surface or sides of the candle.

This is a natural crystallization that happens when plant-based wax cools or experiences temperature changes.

It’s a sign of purity — a quiet proof that your candle is made with clean, natural ingredients.

Tip: Keep your candles at room temperature and away from cold windows or direct heat to reduce frosting.

2. Wax Pull-Away

When the wax gently separates from the glass, creating a faint air pocket or uneven line.

This occurs as the wax contracts during cooling or reacts to rapid temperature shifts.

It doesn’t affect scent throw or burn performance.

Tip: Once the candle warms during burning, it often re-adheres naturally.

3. Surface Unevenness or Sinkholes

Sometimes you’ll see a slightly uneven top or a small dip near the wick.

This forms as air escapes from the wax while it cools — purely aesthetic and completely harmless.

Tip: On the first burn, let the wax melt evenly to the edges for a smooth top.

4. Cracking

In very cold environments, wax can cool too quickly, leaving fine cracks on the surface.

This is simply a natural reaction to temperature shock.

Tip: Allow your candle to adjust to room temperature before lighting if it’s been stored somewhere cold.

5. Cold Throw Reduction

In colder rooms, fragrance can feel softer because scent molecules evaporate more slowly.

Once the candle burns, the warmth helps release the fragrance fully again.

Tip: Burn in a warm, enclosed space for the best scent experience.

6. Sweating

Occasionally, small beads of fragrance oil may appear on the surface.

This can occur when temperature changes draw oils upward.

Gently blot with a soft cloth — it won’t affect your candle’s scent or performance.

At KIHO, every candle is hand-poured in small batches using clean, natural coconut wax.

Each subtle variation is a reminder of nature’s quiet beauty — that imperfection is part of what makes every candle unique.
